Thursday's Must Read Links

I have once again scoured the web so you don't have to. After checking out these stories you will be well-informed,up-to-date on current events, smarter, and a lot more interesting. Enjoy and comment.

Yesterday, the New Right commented favorably on the President's veto of the war funding bill. It looks like sticking to his guns payed off. Democrats have backed off of their demand that troops be withdrawn by a certain date. Prediction. A compromise war funding bill will pass. There will be no withdrawal date, but there will be non-binding benchmark goals for the Iraqi government to meet. Count this as a victory for the President. Read about it here.

My favorite candidate, Mitt Romney called President Bush to commend him on his veto and offer him encouragement in leading the war on terror. It will be interesting to see what GOP contenders distance themselves from Bush. Not Romney, at least not yet. Read about the call here.

Speaking of GOP contenders, tonight is the first debate. It is being held at the Reagan Library in California. Look for Romney to impress tonight. One problem with these debates though, is that allowing 10 candidates to participate in the debate will mean no one will have a real chance to shine. I would have only invited the top tier of these candidates so that the people actually have a chance to assess one against another.

The Oxford Union (a debating club at the venerable Oxford University in England) has voted to quash a resolution stating that "this House regrets the Founding of America." How kind of them. Read about it here from the BBC. If you are still wondering what the Oxford Union is, basically, it is a bunch of would be aristocrats who get together in a beautiful old hall to debate high minded subjects. There may be some ridiculous topics being debated there, but I imagine the educational experience of being in the Oxford Union is unmatched the world over.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is facing unrelenting pressure to resign. The calls for his ouster stem from anger about the failed war Israeli waged against Hezbollah in Lebanon last year. Read about it from the Times of London here.

What U.S. Counties have the most millionaires. Check the list here. Any surprises. Here is another article worth reading whether you are a home owner or hope to be one someday. It notes the dumbest renovation trends and tells you how to do them right.
